The fourth day of the race starts from Târgoviște, a city that became the main residence of Wallachia’s ruler during the reign of Mircea the Elder. During the same period, the Royal Court was rebuilt, the ruins of which now surround the Chindia Tower. The route traverses beautiful areas of Dâmbovița County, passes through Pucioasa, and returns to Târgoviște for a spectacular finish.
Tourist attractions:
The Royal Court of Târgoviște
The Royal Court is proved during the reign of Mircea the Elder, when, in a document dated 1417-1418, it is understood that a fortified princely residence was functioning there at that time.
However, the development and expansion of the fortifications occurred half a century later, after Târgoviște was mentioned as the sole capital of Wallachia (document issued by Alexandru I Aldea in 1431), possibly during the reign of Vlad Dracul or even during the reign of Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Țepeș).
The Chindia Tower
The Chindia Tower was built in the 15th century in Târgoviște, part of the Royal Court monument complex. The tower was constructed by Prince Vlad the Impaler during his second reign, initially for military purposes, serving as a watchtower, firing platform, and treasury storage. The building measures 27 meters in height and 9 meters in diameter. Between 1847 and 1851, the tower underwent a complete restoration under Prince Gheorghe Bibescu, resulting in its current form, including an increase in height by about 5 meters compared to the original construction.
The Chindia Tower is the most important tourist attraction in the city and also its symbol. Specific elements of the building are featured on the city’s coat of arms, both at the top and bottom. As a historical monument, the tower now houses an exhibition of documents, weapons, and objects that belonged to Vlad the Impaler. Administratively, the Chindia Tower is under the auspices of the National Museum Complex “Curtea Domnească” in Târgoviște.
